About Naharkatiya

Naharkatiya, a town in Dibrugarh district is well known and famous for petroleum and gas reserves. It is also known as Naharkatia and Nahorkotiya. Duliajan, an important town in Assam is just at a distance of 30 minutes away from Naharkatiya.  Duliajan, which is the head office town of Oil India Limited was initially in the circle of Naharkatiya but later on separated.

As per the 2011 census the town of Naharkatiya has a population of 18937 out of which females are 9147 and males are 9790. The literacy rate of the town is 87.29% which is much higher than the state literacy rate which is 72.19 %. The number of children below the age of 6 years in the town is 9.76%.

The town consists of people of all communities ranging from Assamese to Marwaris to Buddhists to Rajasthanis.

A very old group of Buddhists who are descendants of the Tai- Phakas or the Phakials are the residents of this town. They also have their own monastery within the town  which is a major tourist attraction of the area.

Geography of Naharkatiya

At an elevation of 397 feet, the town of Naharkatiya is located at 27.28°N 95.33°E. Burhi Dihing, which is a tributary of river Brahmaputra runs through the town.

History of Naharkatiya

The history of Naharkatiya is related to the brutal killing of ‘Nahar’. Nahar was the adopted son of Tai-Ahom King Siukhampha and hence he was a prince. Local stories tells that Nahar was punished by one noble Ahom Kalia Chaodung because of the misdeeds that Nahar did against some noble Tai-ahom elders including the ministers. Soon after that, nahar settled in the nearby area of today’s Naharkatiya railway station and then on, the place soon came to be known as Naharkatiya meaning ‘ the one who cut Nahar’.

The Vaishnav Satra was found by Sriram Ata here. This route was also taken by Ahom General Patalsingh Barbarua in the battle against the Burmese and founded Jaypurgarh.

Economy of Naharkatiya

Naharkatiya is the hub of nearby tea gardens and tea estates. The economy of the place is totally on the tea gardens. Further there was also seen illegal wood business carried out by locals which has now been minimized to a huge extent.

Culture of Naharkatiya

The major festival of Naharkatiya is Bihu like all the other towns in assam. All the threee types of bihu are celebrated here in the month of January, April and November namely Magh Bihu, Bohag Bihu and Kati Bihu. A week long celebration is held in the Langharjan stadium on the occasion of Bihu. This is the season of merriment and festivity in the region.

Another festival celebrated in the region with festive mood is Durga Puja. During this season the idol of Goddess Durga is decorated and rituals are done in the region. In the last day of the puja, a procession is done where all the people walk together and bid farewell to Goddess Durga. 

The town of Naharkatiya also has a population of Tai Phake tribe that majorly resides in the Namphaka village. These people celebrate the Sangken or the Water festival in the month of April. A festival that attracts a lot of tourists, Namphaka village is filled with people during this period.

Tourism in Naharkatiya

Namphaka village is the primary tourist spot in the town. Around 200 odd families live here in the Namphaka village also known as the Tai-Phakey village. It is infact the largest Tai-Phakey village in all of Assam. The village follows all the olden times rituals and cultures and still successfully maintains its heritage. The people of the village speak a dialect which Is very similar to the Thai language.

Located at a distance of around 6 kms from Naharkatiya town, the Namphake village is located along the tributary of the Dihing River. The people residing here have successfully set a great example of preserving ones roots and customs no matter how advanced the world might get.

There is a very beautiful monastery located in the middle of this village. Owing to its serene atmosphere and ambiance, the monastery is perfect for meditation. The word ‘phake’ is infact a Tai word derived from ’pha’ meaning wall and ‘ke’ meaning ancient.

There is a huge similarity between the customs of the people of this village and Thai people. The Tai race is infact a mongoloid population that entered Assam in the late 18th Century.
Other tourist spots that one can visit within the village are Nong Mungchiringta, Ashola Pillar, many traditional stilt houses and the Pagoda.

There is an organization near Tipam Phakey at a distance of around 2kms. from Naharkatiya town. The organization was formed in the year 2010 in order to provide the best facilities to the tourists coming to visit the village. The Dehing Patkai Sanctuary also lies nearby hence people can visit the sanctuary as well along with the village.

The lodging capacity of the eco camp is 10 to 16 members. Thus, families can come visit the place and groups of friends as well. The camp has many cottages inside wherein the guests are provided with all the basic amenities of life. Added adventures are also provided to the tourists for optimum enjoyment. Trekking, bird watching, bonfire amongst others are just a few of all the activities.
